WHEN: This FRIDAY NIGHT, March 26, 1999-- Designated driver program begins at 8 p.m. until dawn. Law enforcement activities will begin at an undisclosed time Friday evening. 
     

WHAT: Designated Driver Program—Border Station Parking and teenage/student volunteers to encourage young people bound for Tijuana to appoint a designated driver. The designated drivers will be asked to sign a pledge not to drink alcohol, and to agree to have their hand stamped identifying them as a designated driver. Eight Tijuana nightclubs will provide FREE non-alcoholic beverages throughout the night to designated drivers with stamped hands. Upon their return from Tijuana, if designated drivers have abstained from alcohol and pass a voluntary breathalyzer test, they’ll receive a FREE water bottle and carrying strap. In addition, the designated drivers can enter a drawing to win a fine dinner for two. The restaurants donating complimentary dinners are members of the San Diego County Responsible Hospitality Coalition and include Pacific Beach Bar & Grill and Rockin Baja Lobster.

Operation Safe Crossing—A binational, multi-agency law enforcement operation which conducts intervention, enforcement of underage drinking laws, DUI and ID checks of young people crossing the border between the U.S. and Mexico.

        
WHERE: San Ysidro-Tijuana border crossing and throughout Tijuana.
      
1) Border Station Parking Lot, Camino de la Plaza and Camiones Way—off last exit, San Ysidro (8 p.m.-midnight)
2) 8 nightclubs along Avenida Revolución, Tijuana (8 p.m.-5:30 a.m.)
3) Southbound pedestrian turnstiles (law enforcement)—last exit.
4) Northbound pedestrian site (law enforcement, community volunteers) 1 to 5:30 a.m.
