Media Advocacy

In the environmental approach to prevention, the Media Advocacy component is the critical element that links all other components (intentional community organizing, applied data and research, enforcement, and policy) into a cohesive whole.
Media advocacy raises awareness of the problem on the public agenda, provides a vehicle for high visibility community response, highlights project successes, demonstrates community support, and promotes policy change.
Below are some examples of media advocacy supporting the East County Community Change Project:

EL CAJON IS ABOUT REDUCING UNDERAGE SMOKING — Editorial —  San Diego Union Tribune —  October 21, 2004 —  The El Cajon City Council is inching its way toward an ordinance to discourage merchants from selling tobacco products to minors. COMMUNITIES HAVE RECOURSE AGAINST UNWANTED SMOKE SHOPS IN THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD —  East County Gazette - The Gazette Newspapers Group —  September 8, 2004 —  El Cajon residents were outraged when told they could do nothing to stop the 420 Smoke Shop on North Magnolia Avenue from opening next door to a comic book store.  This store not only sells drug paraphernalia, the very name of the store is a reference to marijuana . . .
