1 killed in auto crash
Night of partying in Tijuana leads to tragic end

SAN DIEGO – A night of Tijuana party ended in death and injuries early Sunday for young Escondido woman, authorities said.

The van they were in rolled over repeatedly at 4:15 a.m. on northbound Highway 163 in Kearny Mesa, Killing passenger Wendy Colin, 19 official said.

"It was the worst shock," Jeff Goldthwaite of Escondido said about the death of his stepdaughter, Colin. " It’s going to be the longest day of our lived."

California Highway Patrol officers arrested the driver, Yhaskara Vivuan Nichols. 19 on suspicion of gross Vehicular manslaughter and felony driving under influence of alcohol.

Nichols and Safi Hoda, 19, another passenger in the 1995 Chevrolet Astrovan, were in good condition later at Sharp Memorial Hospital, a hospital spokeswomam said.

Nichols was under guard. A jail clerk said her bail was set at $50,000. A court date was tentatively scheduled for Tuesday.

A nursing supervisor at the UCSD Medical center said the other two passenger –Christina Atckison, 20, and Erika Santos, 19 were in good condition there.

The van veer out of control off Highway 163, half a mile south of the Kearny Villa Road overpass, said Doug Bailey, highway patrol dispatcher.

Colin suffered multiple blunt force injuries as the van rolled over, said a spokesman for the county medial examiner's office.

A sale clerk for the Escondido Target store, Colin was a very hard working who wanted to go to school to learn how to become a midwife, Goldthwaite said.

"She was very independent, really enjoy people," he said. With the help of his wife, Carmen, he described Colin as optimistic, energetic and close with her two sister.

He is against the 18-year-old drinking age in Tijuana, Goldthwaite said.

It’s just too young," He said. "They ‘re just beginning to live and experience things."
