Environmental Prevention Model

An "Environmental Prevention" approach works to modify those elements in our social environment that condone or encourage unhealthy and unsafe behaviors.
 . . .
The model (seen to your right) is illustrated with five interlocking ovals. These ovals are the building blocks of an environmental prevention approach (policy, intentional organizing, media advocacy, data & research and enforcement) and establish an infrastructure that promotes policy solutions and community norm changes:
Intentional Organizing
builds support among necessary community members and organization, businesses, policy makers and law enforcement agencies by engaging them in creating positive change in their community. This process develops the leadership necessary to support the change process.
Applied Data and Research
identifies the magnitude of the problem and guides intervention planning throughout the campaign. Data collection supports the need for community interventions and demonstrates that change can occur.
Policy
provides direction to develop your overall campaign strategy. The design of your policy is based on input from your community and the statistical information gathered throughout your campaign.
Media Advocacy
is critical to the campaign by raising awareness of the problem on the public agenda, providing a vehicle for high visibility community response, highlighting project successes, demonstrating community support and promoting policy change.
Enforcement
is important to any strategy in that it assures consistent application of new and existing policies.
