| The
East County Youth Advocacy
Coalition (ECYAC) consists
of high school-age youth
from throughout East
County San Diego. The
membership of the group is
diverse, with balanced
representation from the
region’s ethnic and
minority populations.
These young people meet on
a regular basis throughout
the year, usually every
two weeks, to receive
training and plan
activities. Participation
in the group is approved
by the member’s parents,
some of whom sometimes
attend meeting and/or
participate the group’s
activities and events. |
| The
goal of the group
is to empower
young people to
improve the
environments in
which they live.
This includes the
planning and
implementation of
policy initiatives
that have the
power to reduce
substance
abuse-related
problems in their
communities. To
help them achieve
this goal, adult
allies provide
members with
hands-on training
in the
fundamentals of
community
assessment, policy
development and
media advocacy.
This prepares them
to participate in
the following
kinds of events
and activities: |
- Performing
assessments of
problematic
liquor stores
- Collecting
data on
retailers that
sell drug
paraphernalia
- Working
with law
enforcement in
shoulder-tap
and decoy
operations
- Supporting
safe border
crossing
events
- Writing
news releases
and letters to
the editor
- Acting
as
spokespersons
at press
conferences
and media
events
- Advocating
for prevention
policies at
city council
meetings
- Attending
youth group
conferences
around the
state
