|
|
WHAT:
Community
leaders and law enforcement gather near the spot where a 17-year old
was recently killed coming back from a party in the Alpine area;
unveil dramatic new data revealing alcohol as a dire threat to
backcountry youth; and sign a petition calling for community action
to prevent youth access to alcohol.
|
| WHY:A
1999 survey conducted at Mountain Empire Jr./Sr. High School
revealed that
among 11th-12th graders in rural East
County: |
- Nearly
60% reported drinking within 30 days prior to the
survey;
- 31%
had ridden in a car with a drinking driver, 19% had
driven drunk themselves and almost 50% had drank enough
to feel drunk within 30 days prior to the survey.
- Nearly
40% of youth had obtained beer from parties where
parents were present, while 26% purchased alcohol from a
local store, and 33% of 10th-12th
graders who visited Tecate, Mexico bought alcohol there
either at a bar or a store.
- We
are initiating a Call to Action to rally the communities
in rural East County to address the problem of alcohol
access and use among teenagers.
